Howdy Austin!

SoCo District in Austin
Rob and I visited some friends of our's down in Austin, Texas last weekend. My good girlfriend, Jenny, moved to Austin in January with her boyfriend Keith. They didn't really know anyone down there, just looking for a change of scenery. So, when Jen found out she was pregnant a couple months ago it was a little scary to her knowing she'd be going through a lot of it on her own. I decided it was a great excuse to come visit her!! We could plan her baby shower, get their registry started and talk "baby" all weekend.

It was going to be my first time being away from Porter for more than one night and I was really nervous to leave him. Not because I was worried about his well being. I knew he was in good hands and that he would have a blast with Nonni and with his Grandpas. To be honest, I was afraid that it would be too hard for me. We planned to be gone for four days and it scared the hell out of me to be apart from my baby boy for that long!

I'm here to tell you it was SO much easier than I thought it'd be! We were really active and had such a wonderful time and I think that eased the separation anxiety a lot for me. We toured the city, kayaked on Lake Austin, walked up and down the streets in SoCo, the guys golfed, the girls shopped...It was really a perfect little getaway!

Austin had an aliveness to it that you don't feel in just any city. There is so much to do there and a lot that I especially loved about the area. The people of Austin are very health conscious and physically active. Each restaurant we ate at had a nice selection of vegetarian and vegan entrees and everywhere we went we passed at least a dozen bicyclists. Another great thing I enjoyed was all of the local art and music the city has to offer. I got a strong sense that the community really supports local businesses which I think is awesome. I can't wait to plan my next trip there!

  1. So did you actually take that first picture of the station wagon w/ the canoe? What a great vehicle for conveying the vibe of Austin!

    1. I did! We happened to be waiting to cross a street and that wagon pulled up and I just had to snap a picture. I think it turned out great!
